The Dirfys ( Greek Δίρφυς , f. Sg. ) Is a mountain range in the area of the municipality Dirfys-Messapia , on the Greek island of Evia ( modern Greek : [ˈɛvia]).
Location & special features
It is the most important mountain range in Central Evia. The highest peak, Delfi (Δέλφι), rises to 1743 m above sea level . Besides the mountains of Crete , it is the highest peak on an island in the Aegean Sea . It is very rugged and has many steep slopes. In the east it stretches to the coast of the ancient landscape of Ochthonia (Οχθονιά; Κοίλα Ευβοίας). In the west it takes on a more pyramidal shape. The Dirfys is one of the most snow-sure mountains in winter because it is exposed to the cold northeast winds. Important peaks are Pyxarias (Πυξαριάς), Skotini (Σκοτεινή), Mavrovouni , Ortari (Ορτάρι), Xerovouni (Ξεροβούνι), Kadditiko, Passiotiko and Manikiatiko.
The mountain range is one of the more important karst areas in Greece with many caves. It was recorded under the number A00010054 in the CORINE Land Cover project . As a result, the protected area Esthetiko Dasos Stenis (Αισθητικό Δάσος Στενής - Dasos Stenis) was established. It is a significant area in terms of flora with many endemic mountain plants as well as a large number of bird species including vultures, eagles and eagle owls . The forests consist largely of firs and on the lower slopes of chestnuts , oaks , plane trees , pines and other deciduous trees. In ancient times there were sanctuaries of Hera Dirphyas (Διρφύας Ήρας) on the summits of Dirfys. Today the most important place is Steny Dirfyos (Στενή Δίρφυος), the administrative seat of the municipality Dirfys (Δήμος Διρφύων). The place is on the southern edge of the mountains. In the east is Stropones (Στρόπωνες Εύβοιας).
At the place Leri (Λειρή) there is a refuge of the mountain association Chalkidas' (Ορειβατικός Συνδέσμος Χαλκίδας) at an altitude of 1120 m. From there you have a good panoramic view of the surrounding peaks.
