The Dismal Basin (from English dismal , dismal, dreary, gloomy ) is a large depression on the Ingrid Christensen coast of the East Antarctic Princess Elisabeth Land . It is located south of Oblong Lake in the Vestfold Mountains . Their surface is wavy and littered with boulders . It is characterized by numerous small lakes and ponds .
