Disocactus macranthus is a species of the genus Disocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet macranthus means 'with large, long flowers'.

description

Disocactus macranthus grows richly branched with arched shoots , which are flattened at the base, twisting and turning, and tapering to the tip like a leaf. They are up to 90 centimeters long and 4.5 centimeters wide, are light green and notched on the edges. The areoles are small and thornless.

The flowers are near the shoot tips. They are 4 to 6 inches long and about 3 inches in diameter with a slender tube and widely spread perianth segments that are light lemon yellow on the inside and a little darker on the outside. They smell intense. The spherical red fruits are 0.7 to 0.8 inches long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Disocactus macranthus is common in the Mexican states of Oaxaca , Chiapas and Veracruz between 830 and 1900 meters altitude.

It was first described as Pseudorhipsalis macrantha in 1942 by Edward Johnston Alexander . Myron William Kimnach (* 1922) and Paul Clifford Hutchison (1924–1997) placed them in 1957 at Disocactus .

Synonyms are the following described species and varieties: Pseudorhipsalis macrantha Alexander (1942), Disisorhipsalis macrantha (Alexander) Doweld (2002) (nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 33.3) and Disocactus macranthus var. Glaucocladus Ewald (1989) (nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 37.1).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
