Distribuidora Internacional de Alimentacion SA (in short: DIA ) is a 1979 by the French retailer Promodès in Las Rozas de Madrid ( Spain established) food - discounters . The company is run by Ana María Llopis , making DIA the largest Spanish company to be run by a woman. Between January 2012 and December 2018, DIA shares were listed on the Madrid Stock Exchange and were part of IBEX 35 .
The DIA group operates a total of 6914 sales outlets in Spain, France , Portugal , Argentina , Brazil , the People's Republic of China and Turkey . A total of 4024 shops are operated directly by the company as branches, another 2890 are franchising markets . In the 2012 financial year, gross sales amounted to 11.68 billion euros with around 45,300 employees worldwide.
In January 2013 it was announced that DIA SA will take over the 1127 Schlecker branches in Spain and the 41 branches in Portugal.
