The Groupe Promodès was a French retail company based in the Calvados department . The company was founded in 1961 by the retailer Paul-Auguste Halley and his sons Paul-Louis and Robert as Groupe Promodis by combining several regional wholesalers. Promodès brands included “Continent” and “Champion”. With the establishment of the DIA brand in 1979, Promodès was able to penetrate the Spanish food market. The attempt to take over the supermarket operator Groupe Casino in 1997 was unsuccessful, as the Groupe Rallye , the founding family of Groupe Casino and executives , which had already been invested , made a counter offer.

In 1999 Promodès merged with Carrefour , forming the second largest retailer in the world after Walmart at the time of the merger . After a share swap, the founding Halley family became Carrefour's largest shareholder with a 13% stake.
