The district of Mihtarlam (also spelled Metharlam , Methar Lam , Mitharlam , Mihterlam ) in Laghman Province has 24 larger and 269 smaller villages.

It is located in the center of Laghman, and here is also the provincial capital, Mihtarlam . The name Mihtarlam is derived from Mihtarlam Baba , who is said to be the father of the prophet Noah . The district borders in the west on the province of Kabul , in the north on the districts Alishing and Alingar and in the south on the district Qarghayi . The population is 117,200 ( as of 2009 ), of which mostly Pashtuns , Tajiks and Pashaien .

The Alishing River, which flows through the district, flows south of the city of Mitharlam into the Alingar , a left tributary of the Kabul River . The main source of income for the district is agriculture . However, many young men are looking for work in Iran and Pakistan . Much of the houses were destroyed by the war in Afghanistan , which is why many people fled.
