The Alingar District in Laghman Province includes around 60 villages in four main valleys , most of which are Pashtuns , Pashaien and Tajiks .
The district is located about 27 km from the provincial capital Mihtarlam and borders the districts Alishing and Dawlat Shah in the west, Nuristan province in the north, Kunar and Nangarhar in the east and the districts Qarghayi and Mihtarlam in the south. About 73,100 people live in the district ( as of 2009 ). The district center is in the village of Shahi which is 915 meters above sea level.
The Alingar River , which flows through all of Laghman's districts, is the main source of irrigation. The main source of income is agriculture . Wheat , maize and rice are traded in particular , and sometimes poppy seeds are also traded. The district is very mountainous, so there is little arable land. Part of the agricultural land was destroyed by floods . Approx. 30 percent of the population work in agriculture, 20 percent abroad, especially Pakistan and Iran , and 2 percent each in government and as traders . 45 percent of the population are unemployed.
During the war in Afghanistan , 80 percent of the houses were destroyed. Many residents fled to neighboring Pakistan and Iran.
