Divlje Jagode (English Wild Strawberries , German Wild Strawberries ) is an ex-Yugoslav and Bosnian heavy metal band that was founded in 1977 by the solo guitarist Sead Lipovača .

At the height of their success in the 1980s, founder Sead Lipovača was invited to join the band Whitesnake as lead guitarist , but he declined. Divlje Jagode has sold more than 4 million albums and is therefore one of the best-selling music groups in ex-Yugoslavia. In 2013 the band released their twelfth studio album, Biodinamička ljubav .

Band history

In the 40 years of its existence, the band, which is made up of locally and regionally highly renowned heavy metal representatives from the Balkans, has released twelve studio albums, most recently in 2013 Biodinamička ljubav , as well as a number of single releases and compilations. It was founded in 1977 in the city of Bihać , the founder and guitarist Sead Lipovača had previously been a member of the bands Novi Akordi, Biseri , Selekcija and Zenit and essentially recruited his team from these ensembles. The co-founders Ante Janković (vocals) and Nihad Jusufhodžić (bass) were former Zenit members, the keyboardist Mustafa "Muc" Ismailovski was previously part of the Grešnici formation and the drummer Adonis Dokuzović had met Lipovača at Novi Akordi .

Jugoton released the first three singles in 1977 and 1978, which quickly gained popularity. They were classic hard rock ballads like Jedina moja and Patkica , or a cover version of an old Bosnian folk song, Moj dilbere , verrockt. The first album from 1978, Divlje Jagode , also released by Jugoton, was heavily inspired by Deep Purple and Black Sabbath and contained a new version of Jedina moja . A forced break followed because some band members had to do their military service in the Yugoslav army. Ismailovski joined the Zagreb pop band Srebrna Krila and Lipovača briefly became the spiritus rector of a disco band called Mirzino Jato .

In 1980 the band presented itself in a new composition: In addition to the singer Ante Janković and the guitarist Sead Lipovača, the drummer Kasko Budimlić and the bassist Alen Islamović now played . In this line-up the band switched to heavy metal , in this line-up the second album was recorded - Stakleni hotel ("Glass Hotel") - and in this line-up the band played more than a hundred tour concerts. Lipovača - based on Angus Young - had acquired a schoolboy image , the audience cheered the hit Autostop , but also ballads like Dodirni me, skloni bol or Potraži put . The texts were written by Islamović, Marina Tucaković, Elvis J. Kurtovich and Goran Petranović. The following year Janković started his solo career and Divlje Jagode brought out the third album: Motori ("Motorcycles") with Islamović as the singer. The track number became a big hit and the songs Šejla and Zagrizi rokenrol as well as the ballads Nasmiješi se and Ne želiš kraj were recorded with approval. Two highly successful albums followed in 1984 and 1985:

  • Čarobnjaci ("magician") with the hits Morrison and Čarobnjaci as well
  • Vatra ("fire") with the hits Ciganka , Let na drug svijet and Moja si…

The band then signed a contract with the British label Logo Records - under the name Wild Strawberries .

Then the group Divlje jagode presented itself again with a new line-up: Sead Lipovača (guitar) and Ante Janković (vocals) from the founding formation, as well as Thomas Balaž on drums and Zlatan Čehić-Ćeha (bass, vocals). After a ten-year hiatus , the band released a new album with eleven songs in 2013 - Biodinamička Ljubav - and again with a new line-up. In addition to Lipovača on guitar, the line-up now named Livio Berak (vocals), Damjan Deurić (keyboard), Nasko Budimlić (drums) and András Ispán (bass). Guests were Žanil "Žak" Tataj (vocals, bass), Ivane Peters and Vladimir Kmoniček (vocals) and Vlatka Pokos (accompanying vocals).

Divlje jagode have gained some popularity in the UK, Finland , Italy , America and Australia . They still enjoy cult status in the countries of the former Yugoslavia.

style

The band Divlje Jagode is a classic representative of Balkan rock . She sings in the original language and places herself in the music tradition of the Balkans by covering old folk songs such as Moj dilbere . Although the band stylized themselves with leather gear and the cult song Motori as an exponent of heavy metal , they also play - songs like Mojoj ljubavi (My love) or Zauvijek tvoj (Forever yours) prove this - sentimental Yugo-Pop.
