from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Djafar Bin Amude Alkatiri (* 1947 ) is an East Timorese diplomat and businessman.

Career

The Alkatiri family are the descendants of Arab immigrants from whom Hadramaut came to Timor in the 19th century. Djafar's younger brother is Marí Bin Amude Alkatiri , former Prime Minister of East Timor .

Djafar Alkatiri was the first official East Timorese ambassador to Malaysia . The appointment took place on July 26, 2002. In April 2004, however, he submitted his resignation. He justified this with the large amount of work in the embassy. At a meeting with President Xanana Gusmão , the resignation was accepted on July 14th.

Djafar Alkatiri is owned by Tafui Oil Company Ltd. who supplies fuels. The company received a monopoly from the brother’s government as a supplier to the country’s power stations , earning it US $ 1.2 million a month, and from the IV government it was accused of nepotism. Auditors noted that "despite the size of this contract, which covers the main source of fuel for the country, no performance guarantee appears to have been established."
