The Djebel Dira was a passenger ship of the French Compagnie de Navigation Mixte , which entered service in 1948 and remained in the ownership of the shipping company until 1970. After that it was sold to Greece . After a fire that broke out during renovation work in Perama , the ship sank on July 7, 1990.

history

The Djebel Dira was built under construction number 1854 at Swan Hunter in Wallsend and was launched on February 25, 1948. The ship was named after the mountain Djebel Dira in Algeria . From February 1948, the ship operated between Marseille and Casablanca . Between January 1960 and April 1960, the ship was chartered by the Société Générale de Transport Maritimes . On September 19, 1960, the Djebel Dira collided with the passenger steamer Sampiero Corso near La Joliette and suffered damage on both sides.

The Melody wreck in 2009

In 1970 the ship was sold to Spyros Bilinis in Piraeus and renamed Phoenix . In 1979 she was finally sold to Athens Marine Cruises. She was named Melody . In 1986 it was seized by the Hellenic Industrial Development Bank and sold to Cougar Shipping Co. in 1990. It was taken to a shipyard in Keratsini . On July 6, 1990, a fire broke out during the renovation work. It was then dragged to Atalanti Island and aground there on July 7, 1990. The ship has been demolished on the spot since 2009. The cargo ship Nadine , which stranded next to it around 2000 , has already been completely demolished and transported away.
