The Djebel Gorra is a maximum 930 m high, approx. 6 km long and 3 km wide limestone elevation in northern Tunisia .
location
The highest point of the Djebel Gorra is located about halfway between the Roman city of Dougga (approx. 10 km southeast) and the Roman city of Thibaris (approx. 10 km northwest). The regional road RR75 crosses the Bergstock between what is now Thibar and Téboursouk .
geology
The limestone structure of the mountain , commonly regarded as the eastern foothills of the Atlas Mountains , can be found in all of the mountain ranges belonging to the Dorsal in Tunisia. Tiny skeletons of radiant animals have been found in the rock, indicating that the entire area was once below sea level and was lifted up by the forces of continental drift .
Ascent
About 100 m below the summit are the remains of a Neolithic necropolis with several large stone graves . You can get there by car via the RR75 from Thibar; A subsequent journey to the summit plateau is possible - despite radio antennas, there are beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.
Attractions
Dolmen
The Tunisian megalithic stone graves differ significantly from the European variants - for example, the lateral orthostats are often missing ; instead, the large capstones rest on stones laid flat on top of one another; passage graves are also unknown. The North African dolmens are usually dated much later than the European ones (3rd to 1st millennium BC), but the overall situation has not yet been finally clarified.
Roman city of Kouchbatia
Only a few documents have survived from the small Roman town of Kouchbatia (possibly the Latin name Thimida Bure ) at the foot of the mountain , including a free-standing triumphal arch and an archway attached to the side.
