Janne Mende

Janne Mende is a German political scientist . Her research and publications focus on human rights and global governance .

Life

Mende studied political science, ethnology and psychology at the Free University of Berlin (MA) from 2006 to 2010 and was awarded a dissertation on culture by Christoph Menke at the International Graduate Center for the Study of Culture at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen in 2013 with the support of the German Research Foundation and identity in collective human rights claims. Aspects and ambivalences using the example of indigenous rights to the Dr. rer. soc. PhD. In 2018 she completed her habilitation and received the venia legendi in political science. In 2013/14 she taught in the field of globalization and international relations at the University of Kassel . 2014–2017 she was a postdoc at the International Center for Development and Decent Work in Kassel. She was a visiting researcher at the WZB - Wissenschaftszentrum für Sozialforschung Berlin, at the Research Center for Human Rights at the University of Vienna, at the Center for the Study of Social and Global Justice at the University of Nottingham and at the Department of Politics at the New School for Social Research in New York. She researches u. a. on human rights , modern slavery and global governance.

Since June 2018 she has been the project leader in the DFG- funded research project “Business Actors beyond Public and Private: Authority, Legitimacy and Responsibility in the United Nations Human Rights Regime” at the Institute for Political Science at the University of Giessen.

Janne Mendes book Justification Patterns of Female Genital Mutilation from 2011 has been discussed and quoted several times. Rolf Löchel wrote about it in literaturkritik.de : “What is decisive, however, is that the author has published what is probably the most reflective book on his two topics, the relationship between cultural relativism and universalism as well as female genital mutilation . A comparably instructive book on this will not be found anytime soon. "
