Heinz-Jürgen Voß (social scientist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heinz-Jürgen Voss (born December 17, 1979 in Ilmenau ) is a German social scientist and biologist . His research and teaching focuses on biological-medical gender theories, sexology , queer studies and intersectionality .

Life

Voss is a son of the mathematician Heinz-Jürgen Voss and the mathematician and science historian Waltraud Voss . From 1998 to 2004 he completed a degree in biology with a diploma at the TU Dresden and the University of Leipzig . This was followed in 2010 by a doctorate in the humanities and social sciences at the University of Bremen with the dissertation Gender Deconstruction from a Biological-Medical Perspective , which was published as a book under the title Making Sex Revisited . Since 2007 he has worked as a lecturer at various universities in both fields of his academic education. The Merseburg University of Applied Sciences appointed him to the professorship for sexology and sexual education in March 2014.

Plant and positions

Voss has published books and numerous articles that deal in particular with gender and sexuality. He developed his main ideas in two writings: In Making Sex Revisited (2010) he deals with gender theories and gender constructions in biology and medicine from antiquity to the present. Gender. Against Naturalness (2011) is an introduction to gender research. Both books have received numerous reviews. The focus of interest is on his deconstruction of the apparently unambiguous determination of sex through genes and chromosomes .

In an interview with the magazine Chrismon Voss said that the species Homo sapiens does not consist of two complementary sexes, but that "innumerable" sexes exist. When asked about the latest research, he replied: “Up until the 1920s, there was talk of gender diversity. With the Nazis came the theory of a largely clear biological dichotomy, which is still taught in biology studies, although current research has long advanced. Such simple theses puzzled me, and I realized that the supposedly natural dichotomy brings a lot of suffering. ”Even after 1945, Nazi researchers had shaped science. The scientific processing has only just begun. Voss is thus building on the work of science historian Helga Satzinger and biologist and gender researcher Anne Fausto-Sterling . In his volume Intersexuality - Intersex he comments critically on the position of the German Ethics Council from 2012 on the situation of intersex people in Germany. Above all, he criticizes the fact that the Ethics Council sticks to the designation of intersex as a disease and that "the central concerns of intersex activists, to refrain from surgical and hormonal interventions in early childhood, have not been included in its recommendations".

In addition to his work on gender and biology, Voss has been present in the field of sexual education and the prevention of sexualised violence since 2014. As a research professor and head of the research project “Protection of Children and Young People from Sexual Traumatization” he is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research through the funding line Sexualized Violence in Educational Institutions . As part of the funding line, an ethics declaration and a curriculum on sexual education and the prevention of sexualised violence were created. Voss also heads the EU project "TRASE - Training in Sexual Education for People with Disabilities" and other third-party funded projects at the Merseburg University of Applied Sciences .

In 2017, Heinz-Jürgen Voss co-edited the “Third German Men's Health Report” on the sexuality of men, in 2018 the volume of results for the “Sexual Violence in Educational Contexts” funding line financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Award

Voss's dissertation, Making Sex Revisited: Deconstruction of Gender from a Biological and Medical Perspective , was published in book form and was awarded the International Humanities Translation Grant in 2011 .

Confrontation with Akif Pirinçci

Because of her sex education positions, social scientist Elisabeth Tuider was exposed to defamatory abuse and threats of violence through social media , initiated by bestselling author Akif Pirinçci . Elisabeth Tuider was then supported by Heinz-Jürgen Voss, among others, who was then also reviled by Akif Pirinçci. The former chairman of the Gender Studies Society , Sabine Hark , spoke in this context of a "clear quality difference compared to previous anti-feminist attacks".

Voss filed a criminal complaint against Pirinçci and obtained an injunction under civil law. As a result, Pirinçci is not allowed to repeat the insults that have been put forward when threatened with a fine of 250,000 euros. In November 2014, the Bonn public prosecutor's office issued an order of 12,000 euros against Pirinçci for insult , against which he appealed. In January 2015, Pirinçci accepted a € 8,000 fine for insulting.
