El Djelfa (or Djelfa , Arabic الجلفة al-Jilfa , DMG al-Ǧilfa , tamazight ⴵⴻⵍⴼⴰ Ǧelfa ) is a city in the central north of Algeria with about 235,000 (2005) inhabitants. It is located in the province of the same name, El Djelfa , of which it is the capital, in the middle of the Sahara Atlas . Therefore, it lies at an altitude of 1,138 meters and is the only larger city within a radius of 100 kilometers.
It is particularly famous for its cattle market, which is an important trading point for the nomads and semi-nomads who can still be found in the Sahara region .
history
Based on numerous drawings carved into stone, so-called petroglyphs , that were found in the area, it can be concluded that as early as 7000 to 5000 years BC. Chr. Neolithic have settled there people.
In 1852 the city was used by the French as a military outpost .
A French internment camp was located here during the Second World War .

Festivals
The mutton festival takes place in June. This goes hand in hand with dances of the Ouled Naïl and horse shows.
