Doaa El-Adl

Doaa El-Adl ( Arabic دعاء العدل, DMG Duʿāʾ al-ʿAdl ; born 1979 ), is an Egyptian cartoonist . She is known for her critical cartoons on political, social and religious topics. The artist lives and works in Cairo .

Career

Doaa El-Adl studied art at the University of Alexandria. Since 2007, she has published her cartoons in various newspapers and magazines, including al-Dustour , Rose-al-Yusuf and Sabah El Kheir. In addition to caricatures, El-Adl also draws illustrations for various children's magazines and children's books. She is currently drawing for the independent Egyptian daily al-Masry al-Youm.

In 2012 one of her drawings caused a stir in which she criticized politicians for instrumentalizing religions . For this El-Adl was charged with blasphemy . However, the proceedings were dropped after the 2013 coup .

In 2013 another cartoon caused heated discussions in Egypt. The drawing criticizes female genital mutilation (FGM), a taboo subject that society does not like to discuss. It shows a man with scissors in hand who is climbing a ladder to cut a flower from between a woman's legs.

In 2017 she published her book "50 Cartoons and more on women", in which she shows how social norms can dramatically affect the lives of women in the Arab world and around the world. These include drawings on everyday challenges such as the compatibility of family and work, lack of equality, or expectations of having to meet a certain ideal of beauty. With her expressive drawings, she throws light on problems that women face worldwide, such as sexual harassment , domestic violence , marriages of minors and human trafficking . Her drawings on these topics have already sparked heated debates.

Quote Doaa El-Adl: “There are some cartoonists who only do light, funny drawings. I think that the role of caricature is much bigger than that. [...] We don't have the luxury to ignore things like freedom of expression or women`s rights. "
