The Doassansiales are a group of smut fungi (Ustilaginomycotina) and, like all smut fungi, are plant parasites.
Features and way of life
The representatives of this order are connected to their host plants by a complex interaction apparatus, which also includes cytoplasmic components. Most species form large spore balls with sterile cells from which sigmoid basidiospores bud. This is viewed as an adaptation to aquatic life. Ecologically, the species are quite similar, they parasitize on marsh and aquatic plants, including moss ferns (Selaginellaceae) and various flowering families. Morphologically, the order is very diverse. The genera Doassinga, Melaniella and Rhamphospora form solitary teliospores and are within the order basal.
Systematics
The Doassansiales belong to the Exobasidiomycetes . The Doassansiales are described by Begerow et al. (2006) subdivided as follows:
- Melaniellaceae
- Doassansiaceae
- Rhamphosporaceae
