Dobriša Cesarić

Dobriša Cesarić (born January 10, 1902 in Požega , † December 18, 1980 in Zagreb ) was a Croatian poet.

Life

Dobriša Cesarić was born on January 10, 1902 in Požega in Croatia (then the Kingdom of Croatia and Slavonia ). His father Đuro was a forester and his mother Marija a housewife. At the age of three he came to Osijek with his parents . It was in this city that he spent his childhood. In 1916 he moved to Zagreb and finished high school there. As a child, he traveled a lot with his parents. First he studied law, but quickly gave up, he switched to the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Zagreb and studied philosophy . The poet lived and worked in this city for a long time, and this is where most of his poetic work originated. He made several trips abroad, including toItaly , Germany and Bulgaria . In his life he exercised many professions, which he constantly changed until his mature existence.

In 1945 he became the main director of the literary magazine "Zora" and the Croatian People's Publishing House. In 1951 Cesarić became a member of the Yugoslav Academy of Art and Science . He died on December 18, 1980 in Zagreb.

The poetry of Cesarić have longer lives than half a century. In 1916 his first poem I ja ljubim ... ("And I love ...") appeared in the magazine "Pobratim". In 1920 the popular magazine “Criticism” published his poem Buđenje Šume (“The Awakening of the Forest”). Later in his life he dealt a lot with magazines, but he only founded one himself with Vjekoslav Majer, namely “Ozon” in 1923. From 1929 to 1941 he worked as an editor and librarian. Important works were created in this pre-war period.

His seals are a mixture of traditional form and modern thought. He wrote a lot about the difficult life of the poorer classes and about the things that modern man ignores. Dobriša Cesarić's poetry originated and grew between two world wars. This lyric has an inner strength. He wrote a lot about the events of his time, about Zagreb, where he spent 50 years. These songs have a humane character. Most of his poetry speaks about everyday life. He writes about the beetle on the tree, about two or three bricks on the way or about the train. His writing style is simple, rhyming, understandable. He is also called "the magician of verse". The human heart plays an important role in his songs because it suffers, loves and connects people. The connection between the reflective and the emotional in his poetry is the result of his humane relationship to the world. Cesarić translated a lot from German and Russian ( Goethe , Heine , Rilke , Puschkin , Lermontow , Jessenin ).
