Dobrowolski Island ( in Chile Islote Astrolabe , in Argentina Islote Capitán Martínez Canaveri ) is a small island in the Palmer Archipelago off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula . It is located 5 km southwest of Cape Van Rijswijck near the east coast of Anvers Island .
Scientists from the British Discovery Investigations mapped it in 1927 and named it Astrolabe Island . To avoid confusion with the Astrolabe Island off the Trinity Peninsula , the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee decided on July 7, 1959 to rename it. The new namesake is the Polish meteorologist Antoni Bolesław Dobrowolski (1872–1954), participant in the Belgica expedition (1897–1899) of the Belgian polar explorer Adrien de Gerlache de Gomery . The name giver of the Argentine name from 1957 is a commander of the Argentine air force in Antarctica ( Fuerza Aérea de Tareas Antárticas , FATA).
