The Dog River ( English for "Dog River") is a river in the Thunder Bay District of the Canadian province of Ontario .
The approximately 90 km long river has its origin in a lake area south of Armistice Lake . From there it flows south and later south-east. The Dog River flows around Muskeg Lake in its catchment area in a large arc. The East Dog River flows into the river from the left. Eventually it flows in a southeasterly direction to Dog Lake , on whose northwestern bank its mouth lies. The Dog River thus forms a source of the Kaministiquia River . This drains the Dog Lake to the Upper Lake .
The name of the Dog River is derived from a legend of the Ojibway Indians. A dog is said to have warned them in good time of an impending attack by the Cree . In honor of the dog, an image was carved in stone in the range of hills between Dog Lake and Little Dog Lake .
