architecture

The house is north of Breite Straße in the Bonnenbroich-Geneicken district, on the border between Rheydt and Mönchengladbach.

It is an eaves , two-axis, three-storey residential building under a street-side mansard roof with a mighty, centrally arranged dwelling and a gable roof on the back . The extension is under a flat roof . Brick building with exterior plaster and stucco on the front , the back subsequently plastered. On the ground floor there is a former sales room ( shop ) on the left, which was lit through a large shop window . Since the end of the use of the store and the subsequent renovation, a parapet with a window adapted to the division has been installed here.

In the right axis is the entrance to the house on the left with the repaired old wooden front door and on the right a new door system that leads over the old gateway to the rear property. On the first floor, two three-sided bay windows , on the second floor, two round arched windows coupled by an overlapping plaster frame illuminate the living rooms . Both window systems lie in recessed wall fields that are framed by flanking pilaster strips . The Mittellisene carries an applied vertical strip, which in the attic to a projecting the sill fan out of the group consisting of five single arched windows and window band is decorated with floral designs. In the gable triangle , floral stucco frames the small, square pointed floor window.

The garden façade shows tall rectangular windows with leaded glazing in the stairwell after the Second World War .

Inside, during construction is plan structure remained. The interior doors consist of white framed door leaves with wooden frames and lintels. The well-designed staircase consists of a two-flight wooden staircase with platforms , handrails and turned balusters . The floors are separated from the stairwell by fully openable, three-part folding doors . A washstand made of marble (Napoleon marble ) has been preserved on the ground floor and first floor .

Historical dates

The building was built in 1914 by the master carpenter Wilhelm Kamphausen next to his existing older house (Dohler Straße 225) and the workshop in the rear as a residential office building. In 1932 the extension was increased by one floor by Johannes and Paul Kamphausen. After abandoning commercial use, the ground floor was converted to residential use in line with the existing structure.

The house has largely been preserved in its original state. The street-side facade , which is colored according to the concept of the 1980s, should be emphasized . The ground floor shop was redesigned in favor of an apartment . The floor plan structures and equipment elements from the construction period have been preserved on the other floors. The original staircase has been preserved. The street-side windows were renewed to a large extent approximating the historical models, while modern windows were installed on the back.

The object documents the combination of bourgeois living with business activities in a building and in a street, which is characterized in its old substance by much more modest, older buildings. Despite the weaknesses in the street scene, which result from the neighboring building, which was subsequently clad with economy facing bricks, the protection of the building at Dohler Straße 223 appears to be justified due to its striking facade, its floor plan and original equipment details.
