The dagger-nosed shark ( Isogomphodon oxyrhynchus ) is the only known representative of the genus Isogomphodon within the Requiem sharks (Carcharhinidae).
Appearance and characteristics
The daggernose shark is characterized by its long and pointed snout solid and the existing of slender pointed teeth and dentures . These have the same shape in the upper and lower jaws and, with up to 60 teeth, are much more numerous than all other representatives of the requiem sharks. The cutting edges are finely sawn. It is uniformly gray with a lighter underside and reaches a maximum size of about 1.50 meters.
Way of life
The dagger-nosed shark specializes in catching small schooling fish. Its teeth form a trap that can be optimally used to pack this prey. The young are born alive and are about 40 centimeters long at birth.
distribution
The dagger-nosed shark is widespread in the tropical waters of the western Atlantic between Trinidad and Guinea and off the coast of northern Brazil .
Danger
The population has decreased by 90% in the last 10 years. Because of the slow rate of reproduction and because this shark repeatedly ends up in gill nets as bycatch, the species is critically endangered.
