Dolerus gonager , also known as red-legged cereal sawfly ,is a plant wasp from the family of sawfly (Tenthredinidae).

features

The plant wasps have a body length of about 10 millimeters. They are almost completely black in color. The femurs are colored reddish yellow than the basal end. The basal end of the tibia is also colored red-yellow. The wings are provided with black veins . On the front edge of the forewings there is a black mark on the wing , characteristic of the genus Dolerus . The larvae are yellow-green in color.

Similar species

In addition to Dolerus gonager, there are four other Dolerus species in Europe ( gessneri , liogaster , puncticolis and albertii ) that have a similar coloration. A distinguishing feature is the shape and hairiness of the sawing device at the end of the abdomen .

distribution

The species is distributed in the western Palearctic . It is widespread in Europe and occurs in the south of Great Britain . In the north, the occurrence extends to Norway and Finland.

Way of life

The plant wasps appear in April. They are particularly common in May and June. You can find them in meadows where they visit different flowers. The host and food plants of the larvae of Dolerus gonager include various sweet grasses ( Poaceae ), including panicle grasses ( Poa ), ostrich grasses ( Agrostis ) and fescue ( Festuca ). They feed on the leaves of their host plants. The infestation of wheat ( Triticum ) by the plant wasp larvae can lead to yield losses. Dolerus gonager is considered to be a pest of lesser economic importance.
