Dolichosoma lineare is a beetle ofthe woolly hair beetle family . The generic name Dolichosoma means “with a long body” ( Greek δολιχός dolichos 'long'; σώμα soma 'body'), the species name linear ( Latin ) means “straight”.

Characteristics of the beetle

The body shape, which is very unusual for beetles, is described by its scientific name: straight and elongated. The beetle reaches a length of 5.5 to 6.5 millimeters and is about five times as long as it is wide. The beetle is almost unmistakable due to its elongated, narrow shape (but see Oedemera lurida ). The body is black with a greenish-bluish metallic sheen. However, it appears gray because of the dense hair from the dandruff hair.

The head is longer than it is wide, the eyes are roughly in the middle of the head when viewed from above. The antennae are eleven-link and thread-shaped. The last seven antennae are elongated, asymmetrical and about the same length as one another. The upper jaws are triangular, end in only one point and have a smooth inner edge. The upper lip is wider than it is long.

The pronotum has a fine central furrow and is elongated, its parallel sides are about the same width as the head. The sides of the pronotum are edged.

The wing covers widen a little backwards. At the back they gape slightly apart. They are bluntly pointed at the end and their edge there is covered with black bristles. Longitudinal ribs are indicated.

The front hips are cone-shaped and touch. The front hip cavities are open at the back. The legs are slender, the tarsi are as long as the rails and all five-limbed. The first hind artery link is longer than the second. The claws are about the same length.

biology

The adult beetle is found on flowers on sandy soils.

distribution

The distribution area extends from Spain and Italy across Central Europe to Scandinavia. In Central Europe, the species is generally not rare. To the east, the distribution area extends to southern Russia . However, the species is absent in the southeast.
