Dolmen de la Pierre Ardoue

The Dolmen de la Pierre Ardoue (also called Pierre Ardoué ) is located in the Forêt de Rambouillet , one and a half kilometers northwest of Saint-Léger-en-Yvelines in the Yvelines department in France . In France, dolmen is the generic term for Neolithic megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ).

The dolmen is mentioned as early as 1764 under the name Pierre Ardroue or Ardoue on the map by Berthier (1753-1815). At the end of the 18th century, the burial chamber was cleared out to accommodate pets.

The dolmen consists of sandstone , the next deposit is about 2.0 km away on the other side of the "Valle de la Vesgre ". The capstone is about 3.0 m long and between 2.4 and 3.6 m wide. It has an average thickness of 0.55 m. It was originally larger, but in the late 18th century it lost about a fifth of its volume on the north side when the dolmen was converted into a shelter. It seems to rest on four orthostats .

The condition of the dolmen does not allow any clarification of its architecture. The dimensions of the chamber and the orientation of its access are unknown. It is probably not an allée couverte , but a rectangular Beauceron-type dolmen. There are no traces of a tumulus .

Guégan de l'Isle believes he found two bowls in the northwest corner of the capstone, but they appear to be natural depressions.

The dolmen has been classified as a monument historique since 1906 . According to tradition, the monument was built by fairies.
