The Cathedral of Pesaro or the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of Mary ( Italian Basilica Cattedrale di S. Maria Assunta ) is the cathedral of the city of Pesaro and the archbishopric of the same name in the Italian region of Marche . The church, which was last rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century, with the patronage of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, adopted in 1633, bears the title of a minor basilica from immemorabili .

history

The building history of the cathedral is only partially known. It stands on the site of two early Christian basilicas from the 4th – 5th centuries. and the 6th century. The former was destroyed in the Gothic War. During excavations in the 17th century, significant, large-scale floor mosaics were found from these churches, some of which are visible today through the cathedral's floor windows. The later one is considered to be one of the most beautiful and largest mosaics in Italy with around 900 square meters.

After the relocation of the remains of St. Terenzio († 247) at the beginning of the 7th century, the church became a cathedral. Terenzio was Pesaro's first bishop, martyr and patron saint of the city. His relics are now in a chapel consecrated in 1909.

While maintaining the layout of a Romanesque basilica , the current brick facade was created in 1282-1312, also in a Romanesque style. The portal comes from the Gothic . The three-aisled interior is the result of extensive renovations by the architects Giambattista Carducci from Fermo and the Bolognese Luigi Gulli between 1866 and 1903 in the classical style . The floor plan follows that of the early Christian basilica on a Latin cross , with three naves divided by two rows of nine brick pillars, which support the coffered ceiling with a large crossing dome . Last changes were made in December 2005.
