Porvoo Cathedral
The Porvoo Cathedral (Swedish Borgå domkyrka , Finnish Porvoon tuomiokirkko ) in Finnish Porvoo (Swedish Borgå ) is the Episcopal Church of the Swedish-speaking Evangelical Lutheran Diocese of Borgå . The brick gable is unplastered, the bell tower is free-standing. Around 200,000 tourists visit the cathedral every year.
The diocese was established in 1723 after the Great Northern War , because Sweden had to cede Vyborg with the previous bishopric to Russia .
history
The oldest parts of the cathedral - originally a wooden structure - date from the 13th century. From 1410 the cathedral was expanded and rebuilt as a stone church. It was consecrated to the Virgin Mary . It was destroyed by fire several times: in 1508 by the Danish army, in 1571, 1590 and 1708 by Russian forces.
The cathedral was the site of the first Finnish Diet convened by the Russian government on March 28, 1809. During the Continuation War in 1941, a bomb fell through the roof and damaged parts of the church.
In 1977/78 the cathedral was restored under the direction of Nils Erik Wickbergin and Heikki Netting, with the focus on the pulpit and the relocation of the altar.
On May 29, 2006, the church was victim of a fire caused by an 18-year-old drunk youth. While the roof burned down completely, the interior was hardly affected. There was also smoke and water damage. The cathedral was reopened on July 2nd, 2008. Finnish-language services are also celebrated here.
Furnishing
The crucifix above the altar is a work from the beginning of the 18th century. The original altarpiece is in the baptistery to the right of the altar. It was painted by Joseph Desarnodis in 1846 and makes reference to da Vinci's Last Supper .
The pulpit was made in 1764 by local craftsmen. It is painted in gray-green and gold, as are the galleries built around 1760. The frame was restored during the restoration of the church in 1977/1978 after the pulpit and galleries had been painted in white and gold for a century. The pictures of the apostles and evangelists on the pillars date from around 1760. They were painted by Adam Lindström, a citizen of Porvoo.
The simple font, which was made in 1984 based on a design by the architect Aarne Launos, dates from the 20th century.
The original of the votive ship Fredericus is in the Finnish National Museum . A ship model built by Karl Immonen has been hanging in its place since 1990.
Since 1988 there has been a statue of the Virgin Mary from the mid-15th century on the pillar of the choir. It was made in Central Europe and donated by Lennart Trey, a captain.
organ
The organ was built in 1978 by the organ builder Urkurakentamo Veikko Virtanen. The slider chest instrument has 44 stops on three manual works and a pedal . The prospectus dates from 1799 by the organ builder Olof Swan. He bears an image of the crown and the monogram of Gustaf IV. Adolf .
