Domaine Armand Rousseau

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Domaine Armand Rousseau is a family business run by Charles Rousseau and the owner of one of the most famous wineries in Burgundy . In the basement, Charles' son, Eric, has taken over responsibility. The winery owns 13.7 hectares of prime locations in the immediate vicinity of the municipality of Gevrey-Chambertin .

history

Armand Rousseau was a wine merchant and owner of small vineyards even before the First World War . He increasingly took on the mediation role between the local winemakers in Gevrey-Chambertin and the large trading houses in Beaune and Nuits-Saint-Georges .

At the time of the economic crisis in the 1930s, Raymond Baudoin, editor of the Revue des Vins de France , encouraged him to store some of the finest wines in Gevrey and later market them under his own name. Via Baudoin he also came into contact with the US importer Frank Schoonmaker and began exporting his products. Armand Rousseau bought vacant vineyards based on his knowledge of the local market. When he was killed in a car accident in 1959, his son Charles took over the 6.5 hectare estate. Charles continued to expand.

The wines

Only red wine is produced from the Pinot Noir grape variety . The age of the vines is unusually high and in selected locations is 40 to 60 years. When pressing the red wines, Rousseau leaves around 15 percent of the stems in the mash in order to give the wine a little more tannins . Mash fermentation lasts 15 days and is temperature-controlled, with the maximum temperature being 31 ° C. Good qualities develop in barriques for 18-20 months , 60 percent of which are renewed annually. 100 percent of the top quality comes in new barrels.

Armand Rousseau owns vineyards in the appellations Gevrey-Chambertin Villages (2.21 ha), Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Les Cazetiers (0.5960 ha), Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Lavaux-Saint-Jacques (0.4672 ha), Gevrey -Chambertin Premier Cru Clos-Saint-Jacques (2.22 ha) and in the Grand Cru locations Mazis-Chambertin (0.53 ha), Charmes-Chambertin (1.3667 ha), Clos de la Roche (1.48 ha ), Ruchottes-Chambertin (1.0612 ha), Chambertin (since October 2009 2.55 ha) and Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze (1.42 ha).
