Domenico Cavagnari (* 1876 in Genoa , † 1966 in Rome ) was an Italian admiral and state secretary .

Admiral Domenico Cavagnari.

Cavagnari became Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy and State Secretary in the Ministry of Navy in 1934 . Since Benito Mussolini was also formally the armed forces minister , state secretaries led the de facto still existing ministries for war, aviation and navy . These state secretaries were also chiefs of the general staff of their armed forces. Cavagnari remained at his post until December 1940 . He was partly responsible for the fact that the Italian fleet continued to concentrate on battleships and that the construction of aircraft carriers began far too late (aircraft carriers Aquila and Sparviero ).

His successor was Admiral Arturo Riccardi .
