Dominicus Pelli (born January 3, 1657 in Aranno ; † December 1728 in Rendsburg ) was an architect and building contractor from Switzerland .

Life

Dominicus Pelli studied in France with Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban , the fortress builder of the French king Louis XIV. In 1688 Pelli followed the call of the Danish king Christian V and entered the Danish service. In 1691 he came to Rendsburg, where he bought the house at Stegen No. 4, which he lived in until 1722. In Rendsburg, the fortifications in the northern Kronwerk and in the southern Neuwerk were expanded from 1690 to 1695 under the direction of Major General Jobst von Scholten . Dominicus Pelli took over the construction of the ramparts and the military buildings as a building contractor. During this time he also had his own buildings constructed. On May 27, 1697 he was appointed royal fortress builder.

Pelli was a Roman Catholic. In 1689 King Friedrich IV allowed priests from the tolerance cities of Glückstadt and Friedrichstadt to hold services for the Catholics in his house . After Pelli's death, however, a burial in Protestant Rendsburg was not possible, and the burial took place on January 24, 1729 in Glückstadt.

buildings

Pelli built practically all of the high-rise buildings of the Rendsburg fortress, today's Neuwerk district, including the high and low arsenal and the provision house. Numerous private houses were also designed by him. He was responsible for the development of the edge of the Paradeplatz . He gave the entire complex a baroque style. In this arrangement, the Christ Church , built between 1695 and 1700, is one of his special structures: The wooden barrel vault gives the church such excellent acoustics that many concerts take place here - among other things as part of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival .

According to Pelli’s plans, the west and south wings of Kiel Castle were rebuilt between 1695 and 1697 (Pelli building). Between 1701 and 1706 he built the opera and two churches in Copenhagen .

Dominicus Pelli had a house built for his own residential purposes on the Jungfernstieg and Materialhofstrasse area, which he moved into in 1722 in an unfinished state. Today there is a hotel in this building.
