Domicile

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Domicile was a jazz club in Munich that existed from 1965 to 1981 and enjoyed international renown.

history

The Domicile was opened on May 1, 1965 by the bebop bassist and ex-law student Ernst Knauff at Siegesstrasse 19 (in the former "Schwabinger Siegesgarten") in Schwabing with the performance of the Joe Haider Trio. It had space for around 100 guests. In the beginning, mainly mainstream jazz was played there. B. by saxophonist Don Menza , Benny Bailey and other members of the Max Greger Big Band.

Knauff soon found himself forced to fly directly to New York in order to “acquire” financially strong international acts there, who played at the Domicile for a long time. He also agreed with Ronnie Scott , who ran the famous "Ronnie Scott's" club in London . The first live recording was made after the reopening (the club burned out) in 1967 with the Benny Bailey - Nathan Davis Quintet. At that time u. a. also Albert Mangelsdorff , Dusko Goykovich , Klaus Doldinger and Friedrich Gulda (live recording 1968) in the Domicile. In January 1976 the Domicile moved to Leopoldstrasse 19, where the “ Thad Jones - Mel Lewis ” Big Band opened with a 3-week guest performance . Soon fusion-oriented music (e.g. Joe Zawinul's Weather Report) and freer jazz (e.g. Archie Shepp Quartet) were added. In October 1981 Knauff gave up the Domicile. Although the city still gave him a grant, the rise in the dollar made it too expensive to hire US musicians.

In the domicile there are numerous plates u. a. of the Enja label . A “Jazz Night in the Domicile” of the 1970s describes a chapter in the volume of narrative book Nachtflug by Peter Becher .
