Domingo García y Vásquez (* about 1859 in Vigo , Spain, † January 18, 1912 in Rio de Janeiro , RJ, Brazil) was a Brazilian painter of Spanish descent.

Life

García y Vásquez came to Brazil in 1871, when he was 11 to 12 years old, where his father owned a company in Rio de Janeiro. For five years, from 1879 to 1884, he studied at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts (AIBA) and in the last two years developed into a brilliant student of the landscape painter Johann Georg Grimm . He left the traditionalist teaching of the academy with his mentor and became part of the artist group “ O grupo Grimm ”, later known for their studies of open-air painting in Niterói (RJ) .

Fundo de Baia 1883

His time near Grimm was also his most successful: he received an award in 1880, a silver medal in 1881, a small gold medal and an honorable mention in 1882 and the second gold medal in 1884.

Paisaje de Rio de Janeiro

After the Grimm group dissolved, García y Vásquez went to France from 1885 to 1888 and studied for three years with Hector Hanoteau (* 1823–1890 ) and Henri-Joseph Harpignies (* 1819– † 1916). In 1905 he toured the Serra da Estrela, in Teresópolis, Rio de Janeiro and created paintings for the General Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1906.

After spending three years in Europe, García y Vásquez found that, inexplicably, his painting no longer attracted the same attention in Brazil as it did before. The naturally introverted artist fell into poverty and was plagued by self-doubt. Eventually he gave up the arts and got into fishing and long walks on the beach. On January 18, 1912, García y Vásquez put an untimely end to his life during the nightly screening of a cinema in Rio.
