Dominik Bonatz

Dominik Bonatz (born January 2, 1966 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German archaeologist from the Middle East .

Life

Bonatz studied Near Eastern Archeology from 1988 to 1993 with the minor subjects Classical Archeology and Ancient Near Eastern Philology at the universities of Frankfurt am Main and Pisa. In 1993 he obtained his master's degree in Near Eastern Archeology at the University of Frankfurt with a thesis on "Investigations into the material culture of the Syrian coast in the Iron Age", published in the journal Egitto e Vicino Oriente, No. 16, 1993 was published. In 1997 he graduated from the Free University of Berlin with the work “The Syro-Hittite Grave Monument. Investigations into the emergence of a new genre of images in the Iron Age in the northern Syrian-southeastern Anatolian region ”, supervised by Hartmut Kühne, doing his doctorate . In 2000, the work was published by Philipp von Zabern in Mainz. From 1998 to 2003 he was a research assistant at the University of Freiburg. Since 2003 he has been a full professor for Near Eastern Archeology at the Free University of Berlin.

Bonatz's research and projects are the visual history of the ancient Near East and the ancient Near East in a cultural-anthropological comparison. Until September 2002 he carried out an archaeological site inspection in Anti-Lebanon and archaeological investigations in Kerinci on Sumatra / Indonesia from August 2003. Since 2005 he has been the head of the German-Syrian excavation project at Tell Fecheriye in Syria.
