The Dominikanerplatz ( Italian Piazza Domenicani ) is a square in the old town area of the South Tyrolean capital Bozen . It takes its name from the Dominican church on its southern edge and the former convent of the same order, which settled in Bolzano in the late 13th century.
The square is framed by the late Baroque residence Kollegg and several functional buildings from the first half of the 20th century, including the music conservatory , which is housed in the redesigned buildings of the former Dominican convent.
Originally, the square only comprised the slightly widened area of the street in front of the convent buildings and formed a connection between Waltherplatz and the district westwards towards Talfer with the southern Sparkassenstrasse and the old hospital (the area of today's Free University of Bozen ). Only in the time of fascism , when Bolzano was supposed to move up to an Italian-style provincial capital against the background of a monumental building program, the existing square was designed into a long rectangular square area from 1933. The National Insurance Building (INA) was built on its narrow western side in 1929 and the monumental corner building of the Institute for National Welfare (INPS-NISF) , which was inaugurated in 1936 , based on a design by Paolo Rossi de Paoli .
With the redesign of Dominikanerplatz, the fascist regime sought to create a new centrality in the sense of the state's notions of order in addition to Waltherplatz, which despite some redesigns and the removal of the Walther statue was still perceived as too un-Italian.
