The Dominion Lake ( Montagnais -Name: Nipissu ) is a lake in Labrador in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .
The 350 m high lake is 115 km southwest of the small town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay in the central southeast of the Labrador Peninsula . The lake has a water surface of 53.5 km². It measures 31 km in SE-NW direction. The maximum width is 3.4 km. On the north-east bank of the lake, at the outflow from the lake, there is a measuring point ( ⊙ ) that monitors the water quality. The nameless outflow flows 15 miles north and joins the Churchill River , 10 miles above the mouth of the Minipi River . The Dominion Lake catchment area covers 548.5 km². It borders on the Little Mecatina River to the south and the Minipi River to the east. Low-growing subarctic forest forms the typical vegetation in the catchment area. The remote lake is far from roads. The measuring device at the outflow is approached by helicopter.

Wildlife
In the Dominion Lake probably following types of fish: lake whitefish , three-spined and nine-spined stickleback , brook trout , lake trout , pike and Arctic Norway and the Redhorse TYPES Catostomus Catostomus (longnose sucker) and Catostomus commersonii (white sucker). The Muskrat Falls on the Churchill River prevent fish migration of anadromous salmon in the lake. Beaver , muskrat , American water shrew, and North American river otter are typical aquatic life. The region is used in spring and summer by various species of birds to breed and raise their young. The following bird species are often found in the wetlands: Greater yellow thigh , Euphagus carolinus , a representative of the starlings , Wilson's cassin and Lincoln bunting . Birds that reside on the open water are: American Black Duck , Common Loon , Common Goldeneye , Common Merganser , belted kingfisher and Spotted Sandpiper .
