Forum Domshof

The Domshof-Forum (also Forum Domshof ) in Bremen with the Alex restaurant has been located in the Mitte district, Altstadt district, on the Domshof since 1999 .

history

The seat

The Domshof with the Bremen Cathedral is next to the Bremen market square a central place in Bremen. The square also served as a meeting point in the 18th century. In the 19th century, mostly three- and four-story residential and commercial buildings as well as restaurants and hotels were located here. On the north side of the 38 x 114 meter square, the Teichmann fountain stood from 1899 , which, based on a design by the sculptor Rudolf Maison , depicts a bronze boat with Mercury , Neptune and mermaids . The founder was the Bremen businessman Gustav Adolph Teichmann. The fountain has been criticized for its exaggerated realism. In 1904 the cathedral even asked for it to be demolished. In 1940 it was melted down as a "metal donation of the German people".

Teichmann fountain

Cathedral builder Max Salzmann suggested around 1898/99 that trees should be planted around the fountain. In 1914, garden architect Rudolf Bergfeld suggested arranging a large group of trees here, connected with two double rows of trees on the west and east side of the Domshof. It was not until 1922 that the gravel square was given its trees and in 1925 the center of the square was given a mosaic stone ceiling.
An air raid shelter was built under the Domshof in 1940 - with the loss of the trees and the fountain - which was already laid out as an underground car park for the post-war period. The entrance and exit are right next to the location of today's cathedral forum. After the war, this condition remained for a long time.

From 1990 the Domshof received its present appearance with granite paving, some trees and raised beds and sandstone slabs on the sidewalks. The aim was to divide the large area between the weekly market and the assembly area in the south and the route Schüsselkorb / Violenstraße with trams and cars - like the former group of trees.

The Domshof Forum

After the tram stop was relocated, the Domshof Forum was finally created in 1999 . According to plans by the architects Joachim Schürmann , a very high, almost straight glass roof was placed over this part on eight round, 16-meter-high steel columns. The 1000 m² roof is supported by delicate rope constructions above the glass roof. The three-storey building below looks like stacked, oversized glass containers, which takes up about a third of the area of the Domshof-Forum, which has around 700 m² of usable space for 150 seats. The Domshofcafé consists of glass, steel, white square wall elements and white sun protection awnings . The roof area with two smaller parts of the building serves as a further outer zone with a wide view of the Domshof. The bistro-café Alex runs the building.
