The cathedral bailiff is the administrator of the property of the respective cathedral chapter and as such he has unrestricted access to the possessions of the respective diocese .

In the past aristocratic families liked to appoint their sons as bailiffs because they were trusted.

The cathedral chapter of Regensburg was important for the development of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation up to secularization . Its cathedral bailiffs and their descendants also moved northwards. So was Frederick I of Schwarzenburg , a descendant of Domvogtes Frederick I of Regensburg , as archbishop of Cologne on the expansion of the duchy of Westphalia involved.
