Don Askarian

Don Askarian (born July 10, 1949 in Stepanakert , Nagorno-Karabakh ; † October 6, 2018 in Berlin ) was a Soviet- German film producer , director and screenwriter of Armenian origin.

Life

In 1967 he went to Moscow and studied history. After graduating, he worked as an assistant director and film critic for a year. Between 1975 and 1977 Don Askarian was incarcerated as a dissident . In 1978 he emigrated from the USSR to West Berlin . Since then he has lived and worked in Germany, the Netherlands and Armenia, where he founded a production company. He was the winner of several international film festivals. From Germany to Singapore around three dozen personal retrospectives of Don Askarian's films have already taken place worldwide . In 1996 Don Askarian published his book The Dangerous Light .
