Don Beaven

Sir Donald Ward Beaven KNZM CBE (born August 31, 1924November 4, 2009 in Little Akaloa on the Banks Peninsula ) was a New Zealand medical researcher in the field of diabetes therapy and prevention .

Beaven graduated from the University of Otago Dunedin School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School. He began teaching and research full time at the Christchurch School of Medicine in 1960. and was appointed Foundation Professor in 1971 .

As a proponent of Mediterranean cuisine, Beaven promoted viticulture on New Zealand's South Island and planted vineyards and olive groves around Christchurch and on the Banks Peninsula.

Beaven died in 2009 while fighting a fire at his vacation home in Little Akaloa on the Banks Peninsula . A memorial service for him on December 19, 2009 at Christchurch Town Hall was attended by nearly 1,000 people. On this occasion, the Chairman of the Health Research Council of New Zealand announced that the Emeritus Professor Sir Donald Ward Beaven Medal for Diabetes Research will be awarded annually to the New Zealand researcher who has listed the largest contribution to diabetes research.
