Donald W. Forsyth

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Donald "Don" W. Forsyth (* 1949 ) is an American geophysicist and seismologist . He is professor emeritus at Brown University .

Forsyth acquired in 1969 at Grinnell College a Bachelor in Physics in 1974 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to work Anisotropy and the structural evolution of the oceanic upper mantle at Frank Press a Ph.D. in geophysics. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory before becoming a professor of geosciences at Brown University in Providence , Rhode Island in 1977 . From 1993 to 1999 he was chair of the department .

Forsyth deals with marine geophysics and seismology. He researches the physical properties of tectonic plates , the nature of convection in the upper mantle and the processes that create new oceanic crusts on the mid-ocean ridge . Using numerous seismometers on the ocean floor and on land, he investigates seismic velocity structures and the anisotropy of the lithosphere and asthenosphere in order to uncover differences in temperature, composition and flow patterns that are related to the mantle convection and aging of tectonic plates.

Forsyth has an h-index of 58 (as of December 2018) . He is married to Roberta Ryan.
