features

The housings are up to 6 cm high and 4 cm wide. The females are a little slimmer (= smaller width) than the males. The housings are gray-yellow with three more or less clearly developed red bands on the windings. A total of seven turns are formed. The apex is small and pointed. The first two turns increase slightly and are fairly flat, while the following turns increase very quickly, a little more in height than in width. The turns are separated from each other by a well-defined seam.

Habitat and Distribution

The species lives in calm rivers or in lakes, almost exclusively in the Danube area, mainly from Vienna downstream and in an isolated population near Passau . In the Pleistocene , the species was more widespread in Western Europe.

Systematics

The extinct "form" Viviparus acerous f. clactonensis . The systematic status is unclear.

Similar species

In the Italian pond snail ( Viviparus ater ), the first turns increase more in height than in the Danube pond snail, the first two turns of which are very flat.

The species is endangered in Germany and is therefore on the red list of threatened species in Germany and Austria (2 = endangered). The species is also classified as endangered in the Czech Republic.
