The genus Viviparus includes freshwater snails from the marsh snail family (order Architaenioglossa ). It has been proven since the Jura . The generic name Viviparus means “ viviparous ”, but strictly speaking, the female animals produce eggs, which are carried instead of deposited in the lower fallopian tube ( ovoviviparia ).

features

The housings measure up to 5 cm in height. They are smooth and the whorls are arched. There are flat to highly conical housings. The intraspecific variability can be considerable.

For Europe, the fauna Europaea gives five species of the genus Viviparus , z. T. be divided into several subspecies.

Aquaristics

V. viviparus and V. contectus are most common in Central Europe . Often they are generally referred to as “pond snails”. Both types are offered (usually without a clear distinction!) In the aquarium trade for aquariums and garden ponds , as they rarely or not at all eat living higher plants and are also recommended for combating algae. However, they are less suitable for the latter purpose.
