Since it was founded in 1998, the IKSD has developed into one of the largest and most active networks of water experts in Europe. The IKSD is not only concerned with the Danube itself, but also includes the entire catchment area including its tributaries and groundwater reserves.
The IKSD is therefore committed to the sustainable use of water as a resource and promotes and coordinates cross-border cooperation. This includes both the protection and the sustainable use of waters and the associated habitats. It draws up proposals for improving water quality, develops strategies for flood prevention and the control of pollution, sets standards for emission values and ensures compliance by the contracting states.
