Donauweibchen (Strauss)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Donauweibchen is a waltz by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 427). The work was created in December 1887 and was premiered on January 8, 1888 as part of Eduard Strauss' Sunday concerts in the hall of the Vienna Musikverein .

Remarks

The composer has put the work together based on motifs from the Simplicius operetta . It thus joins a series of compositions (opus numbers 428 , 429 , 430 , 431 and 432 ) that take up all the themes from this operetta. This also includes the Old German Waltz , which was published without an opus number . The term Donauweibchen is taken from a quartet from the third act of the aforementioned operetta. What is meant is a river mermaid that can do both good and bad. In this waltz, Strauss also set a musical monument for the Danube River Nixen .

The playing time is about 8 minutes and 51 seconds plus or minus a few seconds depending on the musical conception of the respective conductor.
