Soldier game

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Soldatenspiel is a French Polka by Johann Strauss Sohn ( op.430 ). The work was performed for the first time on February 5, 1888 by a military band under the direction of Franz Lehar senior in the Second Coffee House in Vienna's Prater .

Remarks

The polka was put together based on motifs from the Simplicius operetta . The work thus joins a series of compositions (opus numbers 427 , 428 , 429 , 431 and 432 ) that take up all the themes from this operetta. This also includes the Old German Waltz , which was published without an opus number . The main theme processed in the polka comes from number 2 of the operetta score ( the virgin shines brightly ). There is no connection between the music of the polka and its title, because Strauss did not consider any of the many military scenes in the operetta. After the premiere mentioned above, the polka was also heard at the carnival revue of 1888 under the direction of Eduard Strauss on February 19 in the concert hall of the Wiener Musikverein . The polka never really became popular. Later it was somewhat forgotten and was rarely performed, if at all.

The playing time on the CD listed under itemization is 4 minutes and 17 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
