Old German waltz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Old German Waltz is a waltz by Johann Strauss Sohn without an opus number. The date and place of the premiere are not known.

Remarks

The waltz is based on the more or less unsuccessful Strauss operetta Simplicius . The work thus joins a series of compositions (opus numbers 427 , 428 , 429 , 430 , 431 and 432 ) that take up all the themes from this operetta. Above all, the prelude to the third act (score no. 10a) and motifs from the dance scene (no. 16), which were already used in the waltz Donauweibchen , were used. The latter was processed here in varied forms. The place and date of the premiere are not known. However, the date cannot be before December 17, 1887, the date the operetta was premiered. Probably a world premiere in 1888 or later. It is also uncertain whether an orchestral version of the sheet music ever appeared in print. The CD recording mentioned below is based on a revision of the existing piano parts by Christian Pollack .

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 2 minutes and 58 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
