Doncaster is a suburb of Melbourne in the state of Victoria in Australia .

The first settlers , mostly Germans, came in 1841, built the Protestant church in 1858 and a Protestant school in 1860. The Germans initially called their settlement " Waldau ", but the name Doncaster soon caught on - allegedly after John Robert Wilson from Doncaster ( Yorkshire ) opened his " Doncaster Arms Inn ". Doncaster has a partnership with the English city of Doncaster of the same name .

At first, vegetables and orchids were grown in Doncaster, but later fruit growing becomes more profitable. In 1911, 1,158 people lived in the village.

The former home of the first Lutheran pastor from Germany, Max von Schramm , is now part of the Rieschiecks reservation and the seat of the Doncaster Templestowe Historical Society .
