Doodle (from English to doodle for "scribble") is an advertising-financed online service for creating appointment surveys or simple online surveys . The service can be used anonymously and optionally with or without registration. The Swiss development company of the same name provides online tools for efficient scheduling.

Technical details

The created surveys are accessible on Doodle servers at randomly generated addresses . The survey address can be forwarded directly to the desired survey participants. The current status of the survey can be viewed by all survey participants, but not by third parties without knowing the exact address. The creator of the survey receives an additional link for the administration of the survey. This link can be used to download the current status of the survey as an Excel or PDF file, or to change or delete the survey. Otherwise, surveys will be automatically deleted no earlier than 30 days after the end of the last appointment or no earlier than 30 days after the last access in accordance with the operator's policy. If you provide an email address , the creator will also receive a message when someone has participated in the survey.

The surveys can be used, for example, to coordinate appointments for several people who do not have a common electronic calendar . With the help of Doodle, for example, an appointment for a movie evening together can be found. In addition to appointment surveys, Doodle also offers factual surveys in which the participants can choose between several options (e.g. to select a travel destination). Since Doodle specializes in appointment surveys, the options for creating factual surveys are not linked directly to the Doodle homepage. Instead, factual surveys can be created under "Doodle's functions and products" or via the free text option in an appointment survey.

In June 2010, the service was expanded to include a Google calendar function. In addition, by subscribing so-called ICS - feeds other web services such as Windows Live , iCloud or Yahoo , are integrated.

The input interface of Doodle is available in 31 languages (as of April 2011). Since February 2008, Doodle has been supporting different time zones in scheduling appointments as well as so-called "if-it-must-be surveys", that is, an additional option to graduate between positive and negative answers.

history

Doodle was developed in 2003 by the Swiss computer scientist and ETH graduate Michael Näf when he wanted to organize a meal with several friends. In 2007, together with his former student colleague Paul E. Sevinç, Näf founded the company Inturico Engineering GmbH based in Zurich , which was later transferred to Doodle AG . The company takes care of the further development and marketing of Doodle.

In 2008, the financial company Creathor Venture and the Schwyzer Kantonalbank innovation foundation took part in Doodle. In May 2011, the Swiss media company Tamedia took a 49 percent stake in Doodle. Tamedia plans to combine Doodle in Switzerland with the directory platform search.ch . Doodle generates income through advertising and paid services.

The service is now also available under the domain doodle.de , with both doodle.ch and doodle.de accessing the same database.

The previous minority shareholder Tamedia from Zurich announced at the beginning of 2014 that it would take over Doodle AG in full in the course of 2014. In February 2014 Michael Brecht from Tamedia took over the management from founder Michael Näf.

Origin of name and meaning

The English word doodle means "scribble", "scribble", "paint a man". According to the developer, the name should be easy to remember and sound light and carefree.

Privacy concerns

Data protectionists consider the non-private use of Doodle only permissible for compelling reasons and only under certain conditions. The State Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information in Rhineland-Palatinate demands, among other things, that the appointment request is sent exclusively via the appointment coordinator's email software and not via "doodle" ("Send invitation yourself").

As alternatives, there are various data protection-friendly schedulers with a comparable range of functions. These include some publicly usable instances of the Framadate software , such as the DFN-Verein's appointment planner, or “nuudel” from Digitalcourage , Dudle ( free software under AGLPv3 ) from TU Dresden and others. For companies that want to coordinate appointments on-premises , there are commercial offers such as Spoodle .
