Dora Rappard , née Dora Gobat (born September 1, 1842 in Malta , † October 10, 1923 in St. Chrischona ) was a Swiss missionary and Protestant hymn poet .

Life

She was the daughter of the future bishop of Jerusalem , Samuel Gobat , and his wife Maria, who in turn was the daughter of Christian Heinrich Zeller , the founder of the Beuggen establishment . She grew up in a pious family and had a happy childhood. A meningitis at a young age, from which it recovered but again, caused her in later years repeatedly headaches .

She received four years of training at the daughter boarding school of the Brethren in Montmirail . Here she met the Englishwoman Florence Barker and through her a life of faith with Jesus Christ. Through her parents' house in Jerusalem she met many people and was able to significantly broaden her horizons. The mission field was well known to them. However, she contracted a larynx disease and therefore had to give up service in her father's girls' school.

Marriage and service

In 1867 she met Carl Heinrich Rappard , who was in charge of the mission station of the St. Chrischona pilgrim mission in Alexandria . They married that same year and had a good marriage for 42 years. They had ten children together, two of whom died at a young age. When her husband accepted a call as an inspector in St. Chrischona, she became the institutional mother of the pilgrim mission. Here she served for decades. She also became known through the song "O du Lamm Gottes".
