Dorfeuille (actor)

Pierre Poupart Gobet , known under the name Dorfeuille (* around 1745 , † around 1806 ) was a French actor, theater director and author of comedies.

Life

Dorfeuille first traveled to the province, where he made a name for himself as an actor and playwright. Already at this time he founded an acting troupe in which he had the functions of playwright, director and, last but not least, that of an actor. From 1775 to 1776 he played in Brussels . The next stops were Gent (1777), Nancy (1778) and Maastricht (1779). Dorfeuille then turned to Bordeaux , where he rented a theater for 600,000 livres from 1780 to 1783 together with the actor and theater director Gailard from Lyon , which he took over.

In 1783, Dorfeuille separated from his partner to make his debut in Paris in the Comédie-Française . But the engagement expired the following year, without an extension. In 1784 he again entered into a partnership with Gailard and they took over the Théâtre de l'Ambigu-Comique . Dorfeuille's plays were a great success and he even managed to accommodate his plays at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal and Théâtre-Italy .

Dorfeuille managed to gain the sympathy and trust of the duc d'Orléans , at whose instigation Dorfeuille and Gailard received the license for the Théâtre des Variétés-Amusantes in 1785 . In 1790 they were able to rent the theater that is now the Comédie-Française for 24,000 livres, with an option for 30 years.

1792, in the midst of the French Revolution , returned Dorfeuille with his troops shortly after Bordeaux back to as the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux to record. However, coming from Paris, he was suspect of the still ruling aristocracy and he was arrested along with his troops. As his detention dragged on, he ran out of funds and went bankrupt.

So Dorfeuille, released from prison and returned to Paris, hired himself again as an acting teacher and wrote his textbook Les Éléments de l'Art du Comédien , which was not to appear until 1801. In 1795 he had the opportunity to take over the Odéon . To do this, however, he needed financial backers, with whom he founded a theater company that opened the Odéon in 1796. But that didn't last long either and he turned to a new project. In 1799 he took over the dramaturgical direction of the Théâtre des jeunes Éleves , a children's theater. He continued this until 1804, when he started to give acting lessons again.
