The village church Altjeßnitz is the Protestant church of the village of Altjeßnitz in the town of Raguhn-Jeßnitz in Saxony-Anhalt . It has been part of the Romanesque Road since 2017 .

Architecture and history

The church was built in the Romanesque period as a field stone building. It is believed that it was part of a Franciscan monastery. The short nave has a retracted choir and is closed off by a semicircular apse . The Romanesque arched windows from the construction period still exist. Philipp Melanchthon is said to have carried out a church visit to the church in 1533 after the introduction of the Reformation . An octagonal wooden roof turret was placed above the west gable in 1872 . Its top is covered with slate.

The church suffered damage during World War II . The repair took place in the years 1952/53.

The interior of the church is spanned by a flat ceiling. There is a triumphal arch between the nave and the choir. In the dome of the apse there is a wall painting that was created around the year 1200. It had been painted over over time and was rediscovered in 1946. It represents the enthroned Christ. A second seated figure is likely to be Mary. John the Baptist and a bishop are depicted next to the four symbols of the evangelists.

The small carved altar dates from the end of the 15th century in whose shrine a Madonna on the crescent moon can be seen in a halo. The altar has narrow wings. On the right is James Major above a saint and on the left John the Baptist. Below John was originally St. Dorothea, but she was stolen. Remains of the former painting with four figures of saints can still be seen on the outside of the wings.

In the church there is also a wooden, rather roughly shaped wooden baptism, which is believed to have originated in the 17th century.
